Become a Runway Modeling Guru

Runway modeling is one of the first things that comes to mind when people first hear the word 'modeling.'

Tall, gangly runway models in Paris, Milan, and New York seem to be the epitome of our view about the modeling runway.

Presenting garments before an audience at a live fashion show, is exactly what the purpose of modeling on a runway is for. During this, your primary purpose is to sell the clothes and show everyone else how good they make you feel.

It may look easy just to walk to the end of the runway and turn back, but it takes a lot of skill and talent. Runway shows, especially the really big ones, are even choreographed!

Being Ready for Runway Shows...

Learning about runways beforehand will help you be ready for fashion runway shows. You'll know what to expect by learning background knowledge ahead of time.

And even if you won't be walking the runway, it is still pretty cool to know about it!

Runway Modeling

Runway models must walk well as well as have a great personality and character.

Backstage at a fashion show can be complete chaos. You have to change quickly from one outfit to another in just a matter of a few minutes.

Organization is a Key Factor...

Once you are done changing backstage, you have to appear on the runway again with complete composure and self-confidence.

Everybody makes mistakes, and runway models are no exception. Even top high fashion runway models have made mistakes.

It is good to remember that if you make a mistake while on the runway, keep going! You must not let your audience know that you have made a mistake.

Some high fashion models make it look like their mistakes were part of the choreography of the runway show.

This is useful because you can make your audience believe that you did it on purpose, they would have never guessed!

Different Types of Runway Models...

High fashion runway models are usually between 5'8" tall and are usually not taller than 6'1". They generally wear between a size 6 and a size 8, of course, there are exceptions.

There are also petite runway shows where the models must be between 5'2" and 5'6" in height.

Most importantly, runway models must maintain their professionalism when they are working with and for their clients. Professionalism helps them handle the situations better, as well as putting you on a better standing with you clients.

Many clients appreciate models who maintain their professionalism and are kind, thoughtful, and understanding to those around them.

Runway shows can be hectic, but when a model maintains his or her professionalism, it makes the job easier on everybody.

Tips for the Runway

  • Always be on time. This means arriving about 15 minutes early and letting the receptionist know that you have arrived, this timeliness and responsibility will definitely impress your client for the better.
  • Be familiar with the clothing that you will be modeling. For example, if your garment has pockets, make sure you know where they are.
  • Runway Modeling
  • Always be prepared with the necessary accessories. Being prepared will help make everybody's life easier.
  • When you are walking down the runway, imagine that you are holding a quarter in between you buttocks. This will help your form while modeling.
  • Learn to wear all garments and accessories while showing your character. Even if you do not like what you are wearing, you must portray to the audience how much you like it and how good it makes you feel.
  • Be polite and kind to everybody, including other models.
  • Arranging your garments and accessories in the order of which you will be wearing them will help your backstage changing be more organized throughout the entire runway show.
  • If a designer comments on the outfit that you are wearing, keep modeling until the designer is finished with his or her commentary.
  • Be prepared in case you are told to take off labels or tape them inside of your outfit. Always carry tape in your model's bag for this very reason, make sure you are prepared for any situation.
